Released on November 14, 2017
A public inquest into the death of Timothy Unger will be held November 27 – December 1, 2017, at the Saskatoon Court of Queen’s Bench.
Timothy Unger was a resident at Kilburn Hall Youth Centre, a secure custody youth facility in Saskatoon. In the early morning hours of July 30, 2015, he was transported to the Royal University Hospital and subsequently pronounced dead.
Section 20 of The Coroners Act, 1999 states that the Chief Coroner shall hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while in a custody facility as defined under The Youth Justice Administration Act, unless the coroner is satisfied that the person's death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.
The Office of the Chief Coroner is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected, and unnatural deaths. The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury can also make recommendations to prevent further deaths.
Coroner Neil Robertson, Q.C., of Regina will preside at the inquest.
