Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart will be in Japan on a trade mission intended to help Saskatchewan companies maintain and strengthen critical relationships while positioning the province as a reliable and quality supplier of food and agriculture products.While in Japan from November 11-17, Stewart will bring opening remarks to the Team Canada New Crop seminar and the Canola Council of Canada (CCC) consultations in Tokyo, where he will emphasize the importance of the relationship between Japan and Saskatchewan, as well as the province’s role as a global leader in agriculture.
“Japan is a priority customer of Canada, representing the third largest agri-food market with exports of $4.2 billion,” Stewart said. “Japan is a crucial customer of the Province of Saskatchewan and it’s important we demonstrate how much we value that relationship.”
This mission will allow Saskatchewan to deepen its relationship with Japan, Saskatchewan’s fourth largest export market. It will also allow the province to expand and strengthen relationships with Japanese companies that operate in Saskatchewan or are looking to invest in operations.
In 2016, Saskatchewan exports to Japan were $976 million.
Japan is Saskatchewan’s largest export market for non-durum wheat, and the province’s second largest export market for canola seed.
