Guilty Plea for Mining Safety Violation

Released on March 23, 2017

Mosaic Potash Colonsay ULC has been fined $85,400 for violating Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation.

The mining company pleaded guilty on March 21, 2017, to contravening subsection 22(1) of The Mines Regulations, 2003 (failure to ensure that all equipment used at the Mosaic Potash Colonsay mine was designed, constructed, installed, maintained and operated to safely perform any task for which the equipment is used).

Mosaic was fined $61,000 plus a surcharge of $24,400 in Saskatoon Provincial Court.

Charges stem from an incident that occurred on February 7, 2014, near Colonsay, when a worker’s leg was crushed by a conveyor.

The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety works with employers and workers to eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses by ensuring compliance with OHS legislation through education, inspections, and enforcement.
