New Chief Coroner Appointed

Released on August 1, 2017

Lorna Hargreaves has been appointed Chief Coroner for Saskatchewan effective August 1, 2017.

Ms. Hargreaves has worked in the Ministry of Justice for many years, most recently as Senior Crown Counsel with the Ministry of Justice’s Court Services Division.  She also previously worked with the Office of the Chief Coroner as Director from 2000 to 2006.  Ms. Hargreaves received her Law Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1985, and has nearly 15 years of experience working in private practice with law firms in Regina and Melfort.

“Ms. Hargreaves has a history of excellence within our public service, and the skills and experience necessary to lead the Office of the Chief Coroner into the future,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said.  “Government prides itself on attracting qualified individuals to senior positions such as this, and Ms. Hargreaves appointment continues this tradition.”

In addition to her working experience, Ms. Hargreaves has volunteered with the Regina YWCA, the Public Legal Education Association, and the North East Crisis Intervention Centre in Melfort.

Ms. Hargreaves replaces Kent Stewart, who retired on February 28 of this year after nearly 13 years as Chief Coroner.
