Day Program and Supported Independent Living Program Open in La Ronge

Released on September 27, 2016

Social Services Minister Tina Beaudry-Mellor today announced the grand opening of a community-based day program and supported independent living program in La Ronge.  Operated by North Sask Special Needs Housing, Employment, Recreation Inc. (NSN), the day program and supported independent living program will provide supports and programming for a total of 12 individuals experiencing disabilities.

“I am pleased to see the great work happening to support individuals experiencing disabilities here in northern Saskatchewan,” Beaudry-Mellor said.  “This day program and supported independent living program will enrich the lives of its 12 participants.  It also aligns with the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy work which aims to improve access to disability programs and services in order that those with disabilities may live a fuller, more dignified life.”

The Ministry of Social Services funds a total of 25 community-based organizations in northern Saskatchewan.  Funding to northern community-based organizations has more than doubled since 2007-08, with an overall increase of more than $14.7 million.  Funding to these organizations totals more than $26.9 million in 2016-17.

NSN is a community-based organization in La Ronge that provides individuals experiencing disabilities with community-based programming and culturally-appropriate skill-building activities.  The organization also operates a participant cooking program where individuals develop healthy cooking and eating practices and are provided meals.

“North Sask Special Needs works in a collaborative team manner that enhances opportunities for vulnerable people in our tri-community group of participants,” NSN Executive Director Deri-Ann Ratt said.  “I am pleased that the Government of Saskatchewan has invested in this important program that benefits La Ronge and all of the program participants.”

The Government of Saskatchewan provided $390,000 for this project.
