Moose Jaw Road to Receive $1.8 Million Upgrade

Released on September 19, 2016

People travelling on the North Service Road in Moose Jaw will soon be in for a smoother ride.  Today, Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit and Moose Jaw Mayor Deb Higgins announced upcoming improvements through the provincial Urban Highway Connector Program (UHCP).

“The North Service Road in Moose Jaw provides an important connection between Highways 1 and 2,” Marit said.  “With new businesses and growing truck traffic, this road is in need of an upgrade.  We are pleased that Westside Paving, a Moose Jaw company, was awarded this contract.”

Improvements are planned on the North Service Road from Ninth Avenue Northwest to Main Street.  The existing asphalt will be removed and new sub-base, base and asphalt will be installed.  To ensure proper drainage, the ditches on the north side will be regraded and culverts will be replaced and upgraded as necessary.

Under the terms of the UHCP, the Government of Saskatchewan will cover 100 per cent of the eligible costs to a maximum of $1.875 million and the City of Moose Jaw will oversee the project and be responsible for road maintenance going forward.

“The City of Moose Jaw will benefit greatly from the rehabilitation of the North Service Road,” Higgins said.  “Businesses in the area will benefit from the improved roadway and traffic connecting them to the provincial highway system.  We thank the government for its significant project funding and we look forward to working with the contractor and all affected businesses to get this project completed as quickly as our construction season allows.”

The UHCP is a Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure program that provides for the care, maintenance and operation of designated urban roadways that connect directly to the provincial highway system.  It recognizes that urban communities in Saskatchewan play an important role in the provincial economy.

Work will get underway on the North Service Road this month and is expected to be completed this construction season, weather permitting.
