Canadian Federation of University Women Day Proclaimed in Saskatchewan

Released on September 14, 2016

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed September 14, 2014 as Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Day in Saskatchewan.  The CFUW is a charitable organization that works to improve the status of women.  It also promotes human rights, public education, social justice and peace.  The CFUW is comprised of almost 10,000 members and more than 100 clubs across Canada.

“The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to recognize the work of CFUW to promote post-secondary education for women,” Advanced Education Minister Bronwyn Eyre said.  “Our government understands the importance of education and it is wonderful to see the support and encouragement by CFUW for these women in Saskatchewan.”

“I am pleased to recognize the 170 remarkable CFUW members in Saskatchewan who understand the impact quality education has in advancing the status of women and girls,” Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for the Status of Women Tina Beaudry-Mellor said.  “Their leadership and advocacy in public education, human rights, justice and peace will play a key role in bettering the future for everyone.”

“Canadian Federation of University Women is proud of having promoted the rights of women and girls in Saskatchewan and Canada since the first Saskatchewan club was formed in Regina in 1916,” CFUW Regional Director Saskatchewan Margaret Hendry said.  “Education was the focus of members then and continues to be today.  Educated citizens will ensure Saskatchewan's continued success and ensure the rights of all.”

In 2011, the Government of Saskatchewan first declared Canadian Federation of University Women Day to recognize the importance of post-secondary education, scholarships, and grants provided by the CFUW that help support women studying in Saskatchewan.  The CFUW Saskatchewan Council provides approximately $40,000 in scholarships to university, college and high school students, as well as grants to music and science festivals, early learning centres and other local projects.

Students can learn more about the scholarship opportunities through their school or post-secondary institution.  Grant information can be obtained from local schools, music festival committees or science fair organizers.

CFUW Saskatchewan is made up of more than 170 members and five clubs in Estevan, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon and Yorkton.
