A family in Prince Albert will realize their dream of homeownership with support from the Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert. Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Jean-Yves Duclos, along with Minister of Crown Investment Corporation and Member of the Legislative Assembly for Prince Albert Carlton Joe Hargrave, on behalf of Minister of Social Services and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) Tina Beaudry-Mellor, and Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Jan Adamson, made the announcement today.”Our Government is dedicated to working in partnership with the province and Habitat for Humanity Canada and its affiliates to help address the challenges many families face in finding safe and affordable homes in Prince Albert and across Canada. Congratulations to everyone involved and welcome home to the family,” Duclos said.
"Our Government welcomes the opportunity to partner with Habitat in keeping Saskatchewan strong by providing more safe and affordable housing options," Hargrave said. "I’m excited to see yet another project that will empower families to embark on a brighter future.”
“Prince Albert Habitat for Humanity are pleased to announce our 24th home built in our city," Adamson said. "This home will be built in partnership with Saskatchewan Polytechnic, and will house a hard working young couple dedicated to their family’s needs and growth. They are very excited to become homeowners, and grateful for the help of Habitat and our community. Habitat would like to recognize the federal and provincial government for continuing to support our projects. The almost $56,000.00 contribution is a large portion of our build cost, which without we may not be celebrating this new build.”
The partnership will provide applied education for carpentry students while supporting affordable homeownership options in Prince Albert. Habitat will supply the materials and students will provide labour to construct the home. Each partner family selected by Habitat for Humanity contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
Quick facts:
• The two-bedroom bungalow house is under construction at Saskatchewan Polytechnic Institute (Polytech) and will be moved to 726 17th Street West. The main floor will total approximately 1,000 square feet or 93 square meters. The basement will be partially finished.
• The federal and provincial Governments, through CMHC and SHC, are jointly contributing almost $56,000 toward the construction of the home under the 2016-2018 Social Infrastructure Fund (SIF).
• In total, Habitat for Humanity has been allocated $1 million in SIF Part A funding to support the construction of 18 homes in Saskatchewan – one in Duck Lake, two in Prince Albert, five in Saskatoon and ten in Regina.
• The home is the second home built through a partnership between Habitat and Polytech in Prince Albert.
