Province and Habitat for Humanity Help Two Prince Albert Families Become Homeowners

Released on July 13, 2016

Two Habitat for Humanity (Habitat) partner families are now official homeowners after two special ceremonies held in Prince Albert today.  The province, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), supported the families’ achievement of homeownership by providing $100,000 ($50,000 per home) toward the construction of two homes located at 316 – 10th Street East and 460 – 19th Street East.

The home at 460 – 19th Street East is the fourth home Habitat and Carleton Comprehensive High School have partnered together to build.  Western Financial Group also contributed to the project.

“We rely on strong partnerships to support our housing goals, and our government is pleased that Habitat continues to bring homeownership to Saskatchewan families in greatest housing need,” Prince Albert Carlton MLA Joe Hargrave said on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer.  “Both of these projects will help us reach our goal of reducing poverty by providing families with access to safe, quality, and affordable homes.”

“Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert is extremely happy to officially dedicate two homes in our great city,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Executive Director Jan Adamson said.  “We are grateful for the many volunteers and local donors who contributed to these two builds.  We would like to thank Carlton High School staff and students for donating labour to our build, and Western Financial Group for their contribution.  Thank you to Saskatchewan Housing Corporation for investing $100,000 to construct these two homes, allowing us to continue on our mission of promoting homeownership as a means of breaking the cycle of poverty.”

The Habitat for Humanity home at 316 – 10th Street East is a duplex approximately 1,000 square feet or 93 square metres, with a partially finished basement.  The second home, located at 460 – 19th Street East, is a four bedroom bungalow approximately 1,800 square feet over two floors including a partially finished basement.

Since March 2009, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $7.85 million to Habitat Saskatchewan chapters for low- to moderate-income families across the province in the 13 communities of Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, Battleford region, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn and Yorkton.

Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals.  Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.  The organization mobilizes volunteers and partners to build homes that provide families of low-income with access to affordable homeownership.
