Two Habitat for Humanity partner families in Prince Albert are enjoying an improved quality of life after receiving keys to their new home at a special ceremony held today. The Government of Saskatchewan, through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC), provided $100,000 in financial assistance to help build the duplex located at 1201 and 1204-17th Street West.Funding was also announced for an additional Habitat for Humanity home under construction at 842-16th Street West. The province is contributing $65,000 in funding toward the project.
This home was constructed at Carlton Comprehensive High School (CCHS) by carpentry students and moved to the site upon completion. This partnership educates high school students in varying construction trades. Habitat provides the material for the build and students provide the labour. Including these builds, SHC has provided nearly $1 million in funding support to Habitat for Humanity for 18 Prince Albert homes.
“Our government is pleased to help build stronger communities and create homeownership opportunities with partners like Habitat for Humanity,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer. “The opportunity to own a home is life-changing and helps create new beginnings for families. Our goal is to keep Saskatchewan strong, and that includes providing families with a hand up so their hopes of having a home become a reality.”
“Prince Albert Habitat for Humanity is very happy to announce the home dedications for our families located at 1200 and 1204-17th Street West,” Habitat for Humanity Prince Albert Executive Director Jan Adamson said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to thank our generous province and our local contributors for supporting Prince Albert Habitat for Humanity. These homes have and will forever help our families gain financial and emotional stability through homeownership. We are also proud to celebrate the build underway at 842-16th Street West, which is expected to be completed this summer. We thank the province for sponsoring this build as well, and the faculty and students of Carlton Comprehensive High School for their dedication to our cause.”
Since March 2009, the province’s overall commitment to Habitat totals $7.85 million. This funding supports builds in 13 communities across the province including Duck Lake, Fort Qu’Appelle, Humboldt, Lloydminster, Melfort, Moose Jaw, Nipawin, the Battleford region, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Weyburn, and Yorkton. Habitat’s innovative delivery model provides opportunities for families to stabilize their housing, and to achieve their homeownership goals. Each partner family selected by Habitat contributes 500 partnering hours in building their home, or other Habitat homes.
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization working toward a world where everyone has a safe and decent place to live.
