The Ministry of Justice continues to support community-based efforts in Saskatoon that aim to reduce crime and make a positive impact on the lives of people dealing with conflict. Nine programs will receive more than $1 million in 2015-16.“These programs exemplify the kind of on-the-ground innovation that drives our ministry,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said. “I can’t speak highly enough of the work these organizations do to address harm that has been done and help people turn their lives around. I’m proud we can help them do it.”
Wyant made the remarks at the grand opening of Saskatoon Community Mediation Services. With financial support from the Ministry of Justice, the organization recently relocated to a larger facility that will allow it to better serve the people of Saskatoon.
“For nearly 30 years, the Ministry of Justice has been instrumental in supporting and funding our operations,” Saskatoon Community Mediation Services Executive Director Tim Nolin said. “Without that, we would not be able to achieve our main objective, which is reducing conflict and violence.”
The funding of more than $1 million will be divided among Saskatoon Community Mediation Services, the Saskatoon Tribal Council, Métis Family and Community Justice Services, EGADZ and the Saskatoon Restorative Action Program.
These Saskatoon agencies deliver a total of nine programs with a range of dynamic services. Depending on the program, they may resolve adult alternative measures referrals, assist Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system, help students learn to resolve conflict, and deliver crime prevention activities for at-risk children and youth.
These services increase the effectiveness of the criminal justice system and improve the futures for many Saskatchewan people.
