Regina Construction Company Fined $4,900 for OHS Violations

On January 7, 2015, MPM Construction Services Ltd. pleaded guilty in Regina Provincial Court to one count under Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) legislation.  The company was fined $3,500 with a $1,400 surcharge.

MPM Construction Services Ltd. pleaded guilty to contravening subsection 259(1) of the regulations for failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of its' worker by failing to conspicuously mark underground electrical cables in an area where work was to be performed and did thereby cause serious injury to a worker.

Charges were laid after an employee was seriously injured on December 19, 2012, after making contact with an energized underground power line.

Employers and employees should always be aware of any underground cables or lines in an area prior to digging or excavating.  Sask 1st Call is a service for anyone planning to dig or excavate as they provide underground facility screening and notifications for safe excavation.
