Two Companies Fined for OHS Violations

Released on December 10, 2015

On December 2, 2015, Venture Construction Inc. pleaded guilty in Meadow Lake Provincial Court to one count under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $51,800.

The company pleaded guilty for failing to provide a system of work or working environment that ensured the health, safety and welfare of its workers.  Four other charges were stayed.

On September 12, 2013, a worker was struck by a lump of material that fell off a hopper bin near Peerless resulting in his death.

In an unrelated case, Elswick Energy Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta pleaded guilty on November 10, 2015, to one count under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $28,000.  The company pleaded guilty for failing to develop a written procedure to ensure the health and safety of workers who handled or used a flammable substance that may spontaneously ignite.  Two other charges were stayed.

On July 9, 2013, a worker was reigniting a burner at an oilfield near Midale and sustained serious burns.

The Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety is committed to eliminating workplace injuries and illnesses by ensuring compliance with fair and balanced occupational health and safety standards through education, inspections, and where appropriate, prosecution.
