Government Provides $7.2 Million to Help Northern Families

Released on April 8, 2015

The Government of Saskatchewan is providing $7.2 million to help the Native Co-ordinating Council and other community based organizations in Northern Saskatchewan support vulnerable families.

“We are proud to support this wonderful organization to help keep more families together in Prince Albert,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Victoria Jurgens said on behalf of Social Services Minister Donna Harpauer.  “We need great partners like the Native Co-ordinating Council to help make life better for Saskatchewan people, and I want to thank them for their dedication to Prince Albert families.”

The Native Co-ordinating Council receives funding for their Diversion programs.  The goal of these programs is to provide in-home support and education to parents whose children are at risk of coming into care of the Ministry of Social Services.

The council is also provided with funding for the operation of two emergency receiving homes; family supports; in-home support for foster parents; visitation, supervision and transportation for parents with children in care; supported independent living; and two peer homes.

“We are able to help prevent at-risk children from coming into care and keep families together thanks to the generous support of this government,” Native Co-ordinating Council Program Director Sandra Fontaine said.  “We also want to thank the province for working with us in true partnership to make a difference in the lives of countless Prince Albert families.”

Some of the other community based organizations from Prince Albert and Northern Saskatchewan receiving funding include:
  • Native Co-ordinating Council - $475,000 (*$5.8 million);
  • La Loche Friendship Centre Corp. - $77,000 (*$155,000);
  • Children North Early Intervention Program Inc. (La Ronge) -$274,000;
  • Buffalo Narrows Friendship Centre Inc. - $122,000 (*$244,000);
