Saskatchewan-Based Soldiers Presented Medals Today in Provincial Capital

Released on November 17, 2014

Soldiers based in the province were presented with Saskatchewan Protective Services Medals today during a ceremony in Regina with Lieutenant Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield, Provincial Secretary Nadine Wilson and Saskatchewan Military Liaison D.F. (Yogi) Huyghebaert.

"We should never forget that our safety and security are the result of dedicated professionals,” Solomon Schofield said.  “The Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal provides us with an opportunity to show our gratitude to the capable and courageous individuals who give us these immeasurable gifts.”

The medal recognizes individuals with 25 years or more of exemplary service protecting Saskatchewan people or their property in either a volunteer or a full-time capacity.  The medal displays a shield, stylized western red lily and a royal lion, surrounded by the Latin motto Qui civitatem tuentur, which means, “Who guard the citizenry.”

“Without a doubt, each of these recipients stands on guard for thee,” Wilson said.  “And while these individuals have invested their time, effort and expertise into their careers, it is the people of Saskatchewan and our country who have been afforded the benefits.”

The medal is also surmounted by the St. Edward's Crown and suspended from a ribbon of green with two narrow gold stripes representing the provincial colours.  Established in 2003, the medal program is administered by the Government of Saskatchewan in close co-operation with organizations with eligible personnel.

“Saskatchewan has a proud military history with its people serving their country time and time again for generations,” Huyghebaert said.
