Ridge Riders Roofing Ltd. of Saskatoon pleaded guilty to five counts under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $4,140 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on March 12, 2014.The company pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 116 of the regulations twice on April 24, 2013 (failure to ensure that a worker at a work area use a fall protection system where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $1,800 with a $720 surcharge;
- contravening section 91 of the regulations (failure to require a worker to use approved industrial protective headwear) and was fined $200 with a $50 surcharge;
- contravening section 17 of the regulations (failure to ensure that all work at a place of employment is sufficiently and competently supervised) and was fined $800 with a $320 surcharge; and
- contravening section 253 of the regulations (failure to ensure that a portable ladder was secured against accident movement during use) and was fined $200 with a $50 surcharge.
In two separate matters, Adam Hunt and Jacob Tootoosis both of Saskatoon pleaded guilty to charges under occupational health and safety legislation in Saskatoon Provincial Court on March 12, 2014.
Hunt pleaded guilty to:
- contravening section 116 of the regulations twice on April 24, 2013 (failure to use a fall protection system at a temporary or permanent work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $1,400 with a $560 surcharge.
- contravening section 116 of the regulations twice on April 24, 2013 (failure to use a fall protection system at a temporary or permanent work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $1,400 with a $560 surcharge.
OHS conducts worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced. In the last five years, OHS has issued nearly 6,400 contraventions for violations in the construction sector.
