Released on March 20, 2014

The South Saskatchewan River Irrigation District No. 1, Inc. has pleaded guilty to one charge under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $49,000 in Outlook Provincial Court on March 13, 2014.

The organization pleaded guilty to contravening section 3 of the Act (failure to ensure, insofar as was reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of their worker and did thereby cause his death) and was fined $35,000 with a $14,000 surcharge.  Three other charges against the organization were stayed in court.

The charges relate to a workplace fatality on August 27, 2012.  A worker drowned when he was shutting down a water pump and draining canals near Outlook.

In 2013-14, there have been 74 convictions for occupational health and safety violations with total fines of nearly $540,000.
