Province, City Of Regina and Gabriel Housing Corporation Collaborate on New Affordable Housing Project

Released on July 31, 2014

With assistance from the Government of Saskatchewan through Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) and the City of Regina, Gabriel Housing Corporation is constructing four safe, quality and affordable homes for large families in the Churchill Downs area of northeast Regina.

SHC is contributing approximately $859,000 toward the construction of the $1.2 million project, which includes funding of about $308,000 through cash and land equity as well as $60,000 from the City of Regina.

“Increasing housing supply in Regina is a goal that we share with the City of Regina and Gabriel Housing Corporation,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister and MLA for Regina Coronation Park Mark Docherty said, on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister responsible for SHC Donna Harpauer.  “This project is a great opportunity to collaborate and, most importantly, support large families who require a safe, quality and affordable home that meets their needs.  The need for housing of all types is one of the key priorities outlined in the Saskatchewan Plan for Growth, and this development is another example of the progress that our Government and partners are making to achieve that goal.”

“Regina has made great strides in our housing market, but there is always a need for more affordable units,” Regina Mayor Michael Fougere said.  “Each and every one can make a life-changing difference for the people in our community, and I’m so proud Council was able to support Gabriel Housing on this project.”

“Since our incorporation in 1981, we have had a very good working relationship with the Federal Government (CMHC), the Provincial Government (SHC) and the City of Regina in receiving financial assistance to build and purchase quality housing units in Regina,” Gabriel Housing Corporation President Ray Hamilton said.  “Our ability to provide quality and safe housing at affordable rents has assisted the Regina Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal community with a good housing stock.  This money, through the Métis Trust Fund, was allocated to us with the support from the other five Provincial Métis Housing Corporation members of the Métis Urban Housing Association of Saskatchewan.”

Located at 176 and 180 St. John Street in the Churchhill Downs neighbourhood in Regina, the project will consist of two semi-detached units side by side, each with four bedrooms for large families.

The Province, through SHC, continues to work with the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to develop new housing opportunities in Regina.  Since November 2007, 389 affordable rental units have been completed in Regina.  Including the Gabriel Housing Corporation large family project, an additional 25 rental units are currently under construction, plus 605 University of Regina student housing units.

Gabriel Housing is a non-profit organization established in 1981 to help improve housing and employment opportunities for Métis people in Regina.  Gabriel Housing owns and operates over 300 social and affordable housing units in Regina.
