Released on January 2, 2014

Ridge Riders Roofing Ltd., of Saskatoon pleaded guilty to three charges under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $1,880 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on December 13, 2013.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening clause 116(2)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers used a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge;
  • contravening subsection 91(1) of the regulations (failure to provide and/or require workers to use appropriate protective headwear as required) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge; and
  • contravening clause 17(1)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure that all work at a place of employment was sufficiently and competently supervised) and was fined $150 with a $50 surcharge.

The charges relate to an inspection on July 15, 2011, where an Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officer observed workers at a building worksite in Saskatoon violating occupational health and safety regulations.  One additional charge was stayed.

In a separate case, Henry Janzen Steel Buildings Ltd., of Osler pleaded guilty to one count under  occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $840 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on December 17, 2013.

The business pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening section 116 of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a temporary work area where a worker may fall three metres or more) and was fined $600 with a $240 surcharge.

The charge stemmed from an inspection on April 4, 2012, where OHS Officers observed workers on a church roof in Warman working without a fall protection system.  One other charge was stayed.

OHS conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.  According to the Workers’ Compensation Board, in 2012 there were more than 1,000 time loss claims in the construction industry.
