Saskatoon Court Fines Alberta Company $35,000 After Serious Injury

Man Shield (Alta.) Construction Inc., of Calgary, Alberta has pleaded guilty to one charge under occupational health and safety legislation and was fined $35,000 in Saskatoon Provincial Court on March 31, 2014.

The company pleaded guilty to:
  • contravening clause 119 (2) of the regulations (failure to ensure that an area at a workplace where a worker could be struck by a falling object was clearly marked by barriers, notices, warning lights or other warning devices, resulting in injuries to a worker) and was fined $25,000 with a $10,000 surcharge.
The charge relates to a workplace serious injury at a condominium construction site in Saskatoon on May 17, 2011.  A guardrail system became dislodged and fell approximately 50 feet, hitting and seriously injuring a worker.  One additional charge against the company was stayed.

Fatalities and injuries in construction continue to be amongst the highest of any industry in Saskatchewan.  According to the Workers’ Compensation Board, there were four fatalities in the building construction sector in 2013.
