Highway 22 between Southey and Earl Grey is getting a complete rebuild.
Work is scheduled to start this week on a two-year project to upgrade about 15 kilometres of Highway 22 from the junction of Highway 6 to Earl Grey to a paved highway.
“The province of Saskatchewan is investing nearly $14 million to upgrade Highway 22,” Last Mountain-Touchwood MLA Glen Hart said on behalf of Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris. “This project is another example of our government providing the infrastructure a growing province needs.”
“A rebuilt Highway 22 will be safer, more reliable and ensure the communities in this area and the local economy can continue to grow and prosper,” Earl Grey Mayor Denise Krochak said.
Construction will happen in two phases. The first five kilometres from Highway 6 to the grain terminal will be a primary weight highway, paved with asphalt concrete - the same type of surface that’s on major highways like Highway 6 north of Regina. This section will be able to handle the heaviest trucks allowed on Saskatchewan highways. Grading of this section takes place this fall with paving planned for next construction season, subject to weather and contractor progress.
The second phase will see the 10 kilometres to Earl Grey upgraded to a secondary weight standard, using a thinner type of pavement, called an asphalt seal. Construction of this phase is planned for the 2014 construction season.
The Highway 22 project is part of 75 kilometres of rural highway upgrades being funded through this year’s $576 million Highways and Infrastructure budget. The government has invested a record $3.7 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008.
