PRINCE ALBERT ELECTRICAL BUSINESS FINED FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY VIOLATIONS

Released on October 17, 2013

S.O.S. Electrical (1998) Ltd. of Prince Albert has pleaded guilty to three counts under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 and fined $1,560 in Prince Albert Provincial Court on October 8, 2013.

The company pleaded guilty to:

  • contravening section 116(2)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure that workers used a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more);
  • contravening section 253(2)(b) of the regulations (failure to ensure that a ladder in use by workers was secured against accidental movement during use); and
  • contravening section 253 (5)(a) of the regulations (failure to ensure that a portable ladder in use by workers was equipped with locks that securely hold the sections of the ladder in its extended position).

The charges relate to an incident on October 25, 2011, where an Occupational Health Officer observed two workers on a roof at a Prince Albert worksite in violation of occupational health and safety legislation.  Two charges were stayed.

Occupational Health and Safety conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are known, understood and enforced.  Thirty-three per cent of all inspections were in the construction industry in 2012-13.
