Paving projects on Highways 6 and 41 are among the upgrades and maintenance planned for the Melfort-Tisdale area this construction season.
The heavily trafficked Highway 6 south of Melfort will be repaved between Pleasantdale and Naicam, and Highway 41 near Ethelton will see improvements from the junction of Highways 41 and 368 to the southwest.
“Highways 6 and 41 are the main economic gateways to the northeast and it is vital that we keep them smooth and safe for drivers,” Melfort MLA Kevin Phillips said on behalf of Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris. “These and other projects will help to ensure vitality and growth in this area for years to come.”
A 33 km stretch of Highway 6 will be repaved this summer at a cost of $9.7 million, while work is currently underway on 11 km of Highway 41 at a cost of $4.4 million. The upkeep on these important roadways is part of the government’s planned maintenance.
“Highway infrastructure is very important to our community,” Melfort Mayor Rick Lang said. “As we continue to grow, we get a lot of traffic from both a residential and commercial perspective coming into our city, and good roads are important to us. We appreciate the government’s work to make sure we have good, safe roads.”
Other scheduled maintenance projects for 2013 construction include:
- Highway 3 west of Tisdale
- Highway 3 west of Crooked River
- Seal coating Highway 35 south of Nipawin
- Bridge replacement on Highway 35 south of Nipawin
All motorists are reminded they must slow to 60 km/hr in highway work zones. New simplified signage will direct drivers exactly when to slow to 60 km/hr. Drivers now face three times the normal fines for speeding and heavier enforcement in work zones.
The government has invested a record $3.7 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008.
