Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris announced today that June 2 to 8 has been proclaimed Saskatchewan Transportation Week.
“A strong transportation network is the lifeblood of our economy and indispensable to our continued growth and prosperity,” McMorris said. “Our per-capita exports are the highest in Canada, and our transportation professionals are essential in ensuring that our resources – many of which are extracted in remote locations – make their way to markets.”
In March, the Government of Saskatchewan reinforced its commitment to transportation infrastructure by earmarking $332 million in the provincial budget for repaving and upgrading highways, creating economic corridors and building and maintaining bridges and culverts, among other projects.
“Saskatchewan Transportation Week provides a great opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the contributions of the hard-working professionals who keep our industry safe and efficient," Saskatoon Transportation Club President Cheryl Starnes said.
Since 2008, the provincial government has invested $3.7 billion into transportation in Saskatchewan. The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure is responsible for 26,000 kilometres of provincial highways. The ministry also regulates 13 shortline railways and operates 17 northern airports, 12 ferries and one barge in Saskatchewan.
