Released on July 8, 2013

D.J. Drilling (2004) Ltd. of Vancouver, operating in Saskatchewan as J. D. Drilling Co. Ltd., has pleaded guilty to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 for failure to ensure that all work at a place of employment was sufficiently and competently supervised, resulting in the death of a worker.  The company was fined $46,000 in Regina Provincial Court on June 19, 2013.

The conviction relates to an incident on February 21, 2011.  An employee of J.D. Drilling Co. Ltd. was clearing a drill pad with a crawler tractor at an exploration drilling site on Cree Lake, Saskatchewan when it broke through the ice.  Three other charges were stayed.

Occupational Health and Safety conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are understood and enforced.  They investigate job sites where workers are killed or seriously injured in a work related incident.
