SIAST RECEIVES AUTHORIZATION TO GRANT NEW PSYCHIATRIC NURSING DEGREE

Released on July 3, 2013

Advanced Education Minister Don Morgan announced today that the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST) has received authorization to grant a new Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing.  The Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing is SIAST’s first authorized degree program.  SIAST now becomes the second institution, after Briercrest College and Seminary, to be authorized to grant a degree in Saskatchewan, outside the two universities.

“I want to congratulate SIAST on this historic achievement,” Morgan said.  “The Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing will complement the existing array of nursing programs currently offered by SIAST.”

“I am extremely pleased SIAST has received authorization to offer a Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing program,” SIAST President and CEO Dr. Larry Rosia said.  “We have the expertise and ability to add baccalaureate programs where demand for degree qualifications of an applied nature is growing.  SIAST is well-positioned to help Saskatchewan and its employers fill the need for a well-qualified workforce.”

When operational, students with a Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing will be able to apply for admission to the degree program.  The degree completion program will provide an important career option for psychiatric nursing diploma graduates, including those who are currently employed who wish to complete a degree program while continuing to work.

“This announcement demonstrates the government’s commitment to meeting the needs of our growing province by allowing students access to the programs they want and allowing the institutions to expand the quality programs they offer,” Morgan said.

The SIAST proposal was reviewed by the Saskatchewan Higher Education Quality Assurance Board who recommended to Minister Morgan that the Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing program be authorized.
