BUSINESSES FINED FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY VIOLATIONS

Teak Builders Inc. of Milestone, Saskatchewan has pleaded guilty to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 for failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more.  The company was fined $840 in Regina Provincial Court on August 9, 2013.

The conviction relates to an incident that occurred on October 18, 2011.  An employee was observed working on a residential roof not wearing fall protection and not connected to an anchor point.  One other charge was withdrawn by the Crown.

In a separate incident, Elite Eaves & Exteriors Ltd. of Regina, has pleaded guilty to three counts under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996 for failure to ensure that workers use a fall protection system at a work area where a worker may fall three metres or more, failure to use appropriate protective headwear, and failure to ensure that a ladder in use by workers was secured against accidental movement during use.  The company was fined $1,570 in Regina Provincial Court on August 9, 2013.

The conviction relates to an incident that occurred on August 25, 2011.  Two employees were observed working on the roof of an apartment building while not in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 1996.  Two other charges were stayed.

Occupational Health and Safety conducts approximately 4,000 worksite inspections annually to ensure standards are understood and enforced.  OHS has a zero tolerance approach to violations of fall protection.
