Repaving on Highway 55 near Nipawin is now complete, providing a safe, smooth surface for motorists and major trucking companies that utilize this crucial east-west corridor to service northern Saskatchewan.
"Repaving is vital to maintaining the economic growth in high traffic corridors like Highway 55," Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshaw said on behalf of Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris. "This $5.3 million investment will go a long way to ensuring the Saskatchewan Advantage when it comes to hauling goods across our great province."
Approximately 18 kilometres (km) of repaving has been completed from Tindall Avenue in Nipawin to southeast of Love. Work began in early August and final clean up, work on approaches and trimming of side slopes is taking place this week. Traffic was reduced to one lane at times during construction.
Highway 55 west of Nipawin has a traffic volume of approximately 1,980 vehicles per day.
This project is part of 320 km of repaving in Saskatchewan taking place during the 2012-13 construction season. Overall, about 1,200 km of provincial highways are being improved this year thanks to the $585.1 million Highways and Infrastructure budget, the second largest Highways budget in the Province of Saskatchewan's history.
