Drivers now have safer access off Highway 1 to Highway 46 at Balgonie with the completion of an exit ramp. The ramp is designed to improve traffic flow, the line of sight for drivers and safety.
"As the MLA for this area, I have driven along this corridor countless times," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris said. "I understand the need for safety and accessibility for our growing communities along the Trans-Canada. The new exit ramp at Balgonie, coupled with new ramps at White City, are promises kept and delivered by our government."
"I want to thank the ministry for the assistance, construction and efforts thus far," Balgonie Mayor Tim Sterzer said. "The work completed at this intersection is a great first step in addressing the long-term needs to keep residents and highway traffic safe."
Construction on this $1.4 million project began September 4, 2012, to build an exit ramp westbound on Highway 1 to northbound on Highway 46.
The ramp is designed to allow for high-speed exit from Highway 1 (westbound) onto Highway 46 (northbound). The smooth transition from the ramp to the highway supports the flow of traffic and improves sight lines for vehicles accessing Highway 1. The ramp will improve traffic flow and enhance the overall safety of the intersection.
In addition, ramps were built and opened to traffic on September 7, 2012, at Highways 1 and 48 at White City. This $2.5 million project included building an exit ramp eastbound on Highway 1 to southbound on Highway 48, and an entrance ramp northbound on Highway 48 to eastbound on Highway 1 to ensure safe access on and off Highway 1.
