New Overpass will Increase Traffic Safety
Construction has resumed on the new $43 million overpass at the junction of Highway 1 and Pinkie Road.
"With the commercial and residential development in Regina's southwest quadrant, we are seeing increases in traffic," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Don McMorris said. "Our government is committed to providing the people of Saskatchewan and the Regina region with the infrastructure that will support our growing province, economy and communities."
The new overpass will allow for continued development at the Global Transportation Hub and provide for safer, more efficient traffic flow on Regina's west side.
New construction is beginning on the bridge and grading work, which began in 2011, will continue on the abutments, connecting ramps and roadways. The overpass is expected to be open in late fall, 2013.
The grading and road work for the overpass has been contracted to W.F. Botkin Construction Ltd., while construction of the bridge structure has been contracted to Westridge Construction Ltd. More than 140,000 kg of reinforcing steel will be used in the bridge. Laid end to end, that is almost like driving to Moose Jaw from Regina or 58 kms.
The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure reminds motorists that significant safety measures are in place temporarily near the construction zone. Traffic signals have been installed at the intersection of Highway 1 and the West Regina Bypass. The speed limit on Highway 1 has also been reduced from 110 km/h to 60 km/h from a distance 525 metres east and west of this intersection.
