CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON HIGHWAY 1 AND PINKIE ROAD INTERCHANGE NEAR REGINA

Released on September 8, 2011

The Weekly Provincial Highway Construction Update

Work began just west of Regina this week on the earth embankments for the Trans-Canada Highway 1 and Pinkie Road Interchange, which when completed will help accommodate truck traffic to and from the Global Transportation Hub.

"It's great to see this multi-year project continuing to move forward to help drive Saskatchewan's export-based economy," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "As always, please be cautious and alert near any construction activity as our ministry crews and contractors work to improve the highway system."

The interchange is part of Stage 2 of the West Regina Bypass, which when completed will see a paved four-lane road connecting Trans-Canada Highway 1 to Dewdney Avenue, an interchange at the junction of Highway 1 and Pinkie Road, along with a railway overpass along the route. Work is expected to focus this year on the interchange's embankments to allow material to settle. Bridge work can begin as early as 2012. Stage 2 is currently targeted to fully open to traffic for 2013/14. The West Regina Bypass is planned to ultimately connect Highways 1 and 11.

Other new construction activity highlighted for this update period includes construction of a turning lane and acceleration lane on Highway 12 near Martensville, along with culvert replacements on Highway 49 near Pelly and Highway 55 west of Meadow Lake. More details about the work outlined above, along with other potential impacts to motorists and information about other projects in various stages of activity throughout the province can be found in the attached backgrounder.
