PREMIER ANNOUNCES REPLACEMENT OF SASKATCHEWAN HOSPITAL NORTH BATTLEFORD

Released on August 18, 2011

Premier Brad Wall announced today the replacement of Saskatchewan's psychiatric rehabilitation hospital building, paving the way for improved conditions for patients at Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford.

"Today we are following through on our promise to replace this building with a facility that creates a better, more effective environment for therapy and recovery," Wall said. "Our government wants to make sure the patient will come first in this new facility, and in mental health services across the province."

The province is providing $8 million immediately so Prairie North Health Region can begin work on detailed planning. Once those plans receive final government approval, tendering and construction will follow. The new facility will house 188 patients for rehabilitation, forensic appraisal and monitoring.

"We are ecstatic that this day has come," Saskatchewan Hospital Family Council Chair Celeste Bridgeman said. "We feel that a new facility that has more space, privacy and brighter patient areas will encourage healing and provide an overall higher quality of life. Happier surroundings make for happier patients."

"We are thrilled with today's announcement," Prairie North Regional Health Authority Board Chair Bonnie O'Grady said. "Saskatchewan Hospital is so important to the people who live and work here, as well as to the community of The Battlefords. This announcement is recognition of that importance, acknowledgement of the work and support of so many, and a commitment to providing the right services to the most vulnerable."

In April 2009, the Ministry of Health approved additional planning to refine the scope of the project to replace the facility. With today's announcement, detailed planning can begin, including the use of Lean methodology to ensure efficient use of space and a patient- and family-centred environment.

The new building will have increased capacity, to reduce wait times for services.
