HIGHWAY 1 AND 4 INTERCHANGE IMPROVEMENTS IN SWIFT CURRENT COMPLETE

Released on September 7, 2010

Premier Brad Wall, Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter and Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer celebrated today the completion of improvements to the Trans-Canada Highway 1 and Highway 4 Interchange in Swift Current.

"Locally, this project improves access to Swift Current commercial developments and hospital, while provincially, it improves the flow of goods and services on the highway network, which is important to Saskatchewan's export-based economy," Premier Brad Wall said.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to see this work in Swift Current reach this milestone. The Province is proud to partner with the City of Swift Current, which did a tremendous job of seeing the work through," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said.

"We have had a great partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan in terms of completing this much needed improvement to our No. 1 and No. 4 interchange. The residents of Swift Current and southwest Saskatchewan as well as the many tourists coming to our city now have a safer and more efficient interchange to navigate. It really is a welcome addition and enhancement for Swift Current and we are very pleased to celebrate the official opening," Mayor Jerrod Schafer said.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure provided an estimated $6.5 million toward improvements at the interchange. The City of Swift Current contributed to the design work and managed the project.

Improvements included widening Highway 4 from Swift Current Creek to about 200 metres north of Saskatchewan Drive. The Saskatchewan Drive intersection is the main access point to the Swift Current Hospital, as well as commercial developments.

Trans-Canada Highway 1 westbound and eastbound exit ramps, along with north and south service roads were also moved further apart to create greater separation improving traffic flow and safety.

Construction on the project began in the fall of 2009 and was recently completed following the installation of new signage and street markings, along with the activation of traffic signals at the four main intersections along Highway 4.
