Canada's transportation ministers had an opportunity to meet this week in Halifax and discuss important transportation and infrastructure initiatives. Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter raised concerns over Saskatchewan's flood ravaged infrastructure stimulus projects to Federal Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Chuck Strahl.
Reiter indicated that Saskatchewan has been providing an evaluation of projects that are potentially at risk in the province. Saskatchewan will continue to work with its federal colleagues and continue to provide updates on these projects moving forward.
"We are pleased that the Federal Government will give due consideration to our concerns about provincial and municipal projects that were impacted by construction delays," Reiter said. "Minister Strahl indicated that we will be treated fairly and reasonably as we move forward in providing progress reports that indicate how much impact wet weather had on Saskatchewan's road construction schedules."
Reiter also shared details about the New West Partnership, which was signed this past spring by Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. The partnership's transportation goals include streamlining trucking regulations to allow for more seamless passage between the three provinces. Other ministers were keenly interested to hear how the three western provinces are working to improve interprovincial commerce through more efficient regulation.
