WEEKLY PROVINCIAL HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Released on May 27, 2010

Motorists are advised to be aware of new and ongoing provincial highway construction and other impacts on their travel.

"Watch out for the Orange Zone, be alert and be prepared to stop as directed when driving this construction season," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "Remember, drivers who exceed 60 km/h when passing highway workers and equipment face a base fine of $140."

Motorists are reminded a 1-km segment of the eastbound passing lane of Highway 1 near Belle Plaine has been closed and to slow to 60 km/h. This segment, which is part of an overpass crossing railway tracks, has been closed as a precautionary measure as engineers examine some earth that's moved. Two-lane traffic is still operating on Highway 1 westbound in the area, but motorists are advised to also reduce speed in this area and avoid the driving-lane shoulder.

New work recently underway includes a culvert replacement project on Highway 3 near Spiritwood that will involve a temporary detour, along with surfacing work on Highway 23 near Somme that will reduce traffic to one lane through the construction area. More details about these and other projects are available in the attached backgrounder.

Construction work is subject to weather conditions and contractor progress. Motorists can also get additional travel information from the Highway Hotline online at http://www.highways.gov.sk.ca/road-conditions/.

Highway Hotline information via telephone or wireless device is as follows: Regina and area at 306-787-7623; Saskatoon and area at 306-933-8333; on the SaskTel cellular network at *ROAD; and toll-free across Canada at 1-888-335-7623; and at http://roadinfo.telenium.ca/mobile.html.
