$59 MILLION IN ROAD IMPROVEMENTS FOR BATTLEFORDS-LLOYDMINSTER AREA IN 2010

Released on December 10, 2010

Highway 40 Alone Sees 100 km of Work Thanks to Federal and Provincial Funding

Transportation links for motorists, shippers and the energy sector are improved thanks to more than $59 million in road work - including about 100 km on Highway 40 - that took place during the 2010 construction season in the Battlefords-Lloydminster area in Saskatchewan.

"Our improved highways are vital to our families and communities," said Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Member of Parliament for Battlefords-Lloydminster. "Our government understands the importance of supporting infrastructure projects that create jobs, stimulate the economy and improve the quality of life throughout Saskatchewan."

"Saskatchewan's export-based economy depends on efficient transportation links to move goods and services safely and efficiently to local, provincial and worldwide destinations," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "These various investments will help make our province more competitive for shippers and attractive for business, while contributing to better roads for everyone."

Provincially funded projects, such as other road upgrades, micro-surfacing, seal coat work and repaving, were completed in 2010 in the Battlefords-Lloydminster area in Saskatchewan through an investment of more than $30 million. Various road works on Highway 40 were also completed, with a joint contribution from the Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan for more than $21.6 million in total eligible costs under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF). The Government of Saskatchewan invested an additional $3.7 million for costs that were not eligible under ISF. The entire Highway 40 project was valued at approximately $25.3 million.

Since the launch of the Economic Action Plan, $10.7 billion has been committed through Infrastructure Canada's programs toward approximately 6,200 projects. Along with contributions from other partners such as provinces, territories and municipalities, this represents a total investment of more than $30 billion.
