ROUTE SELECTED FOR YORKTON WEST TRUCK ROUTE

Released on November 30, 2009

The Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure unveiled the approved route for Phase 2 of the Yorkton West Truck Route.

A map of the approved route is available on the ministry's web site at www.highways.gov.sk.ca

"The provincial government is committed to investing in transportation infrastructure that supports economic development and enhances safety," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "This corridor supports the development of new canola crushing facilities that are bringing nearly $200 million in investment and more than 110 jobs to the Yorkton area."

Phase 2 of the Yorkton West Truck Route involves building a new highway from Highway 16 at the Grain Miller Road access to Highway 52. The corridor will allow more trucks delivering canola to access crushing facilities without the need to travel through the city. With approval of the route, detailed design work will begin immediately, with construction expected to commence in the 2010 construction season.

"Highway developments of this nature require land for rights of way and it can be difficult to balance the desire for transportation efficiency with impacts on individual property owners," Yorkton MLA Greg Ottenbreit said. "Our government has worked diligently to find an option that balances these interests."

Work on Phase 1 is currently in progress. Phase 1 involves moving a portion of the existing Highway 16 south of its current alignment and realigning the access to Grain Miller Road so that it crosses Highway 16 at right angles.

Total cost of Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Yorkton West Truck Route is estimated at $21 million.
