Premier Brad Wall today announced the establishment of a new authority to guide the development of the Global Transportation Hub (GTH) near Regina, while appointing Cypress Hills MLA Wayne Elhard to head the authority.
"The Global Transportation Hub Authority (GTHA) will focus its efforts on marketing, financing, planning and attracting more tenants to this important project," Wall said. "I'm also very pleased that Wayne Elhard has agreed to chair this new authority. I can't think of anyone better qualified to guide this important work."
Elhard begins work immediately. One of his first tasks will be to build a board of directors for the GTHA. The board will be named this fall.
"Loblaw and several other companies have expressed interest in being part of the Global Transportation Hub," Elhard said. "This project has reached the point where it requires dedicated resources and an organizational structure in order to achieve its full potential."
The Global Transportation Hub will provide Saskatchewan exporters with improved access to national and international markets. The GTHA is modelled on similar Canadian authorities, like the Regina Airport Authority, that currently operate transportation facilities.
The Global Transportation Hub will be designed to efficiently transfer shipping containers from trucks to trains. The Government of Saskatchewan, the Government of Canada, the City of Regina and CP Rail are all working in partnership on this project.
