About 2.6 million cubic metres of earth was used in provincial highway projects last year and even greater quantities are expected to be moved this construction season.
"The sheer volume of the material moved by construction equipment in building the base for roads and other construction activities is amazing," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Jim Reiter said. "I also want to once again remind motorists to keep Orange Zone safety in mind and remember that drivers who exceed 60 km/h when passing a highway worker face a base fine of $140."
Highway work that has recently started includes about 16 kilometres (km) of construction on Highway 8 near Fairlight, 12 km on Highway 35 south of Leross and about 7 km on Highway 55 northwest of Debden. For more details about these projects and other ongoing work, please see attached backgrounder.
Construction work is subject to weather conditions and contractor progress. Motorists can get important travel information on the Summer Road Conditions and Road Conditions Map sections of the Highway Hotline online at www.highways.gov.sk.ca/road-conditions/.
