TRUCKERS CAN ‘PIT’ STOP FOR BRAKE SAFETY WEEK

Released on September 22, 2008

Saskatchewan's transportation partners have teamed up for Brake Safety Week held throughout North America from Sept. 21 to 28. In recognition of the event, free commercial vehicle brake inspections and educational material will be offered at a Regina truck stop tomorrow and a Saskatoon truck stop on Thursday.

"Our robust, export-driven economy relies on quick, efficient and safe shipping routes to worldwide markets with the trucking industry playing a vital role," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Wayne Elhard said. "I encourage professional commercial drivers to take advantage of these two free educational events.

"By ‘pit stopping' for a brake inspection, they can also learn about the best maintenance and operational practices, which may help drivers move goods more efficiently in the long run by avoiding a potential break down or an infraction."

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure, SGI, the Saskatchewan Trucking Association (STA) and other industry-related representatives have worked together to host the first event of the week Tuesday, Sept. 23 at the Husky Truck Stop on Highway 1 east. The second event will take place Thursday, Sept. 25 at the Husky Truck Stop on Highway 16 west of Saskatoon. These two "pit stops" run each day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Commercial drivers who voluntarily pull into these truck stops will be eligible for a free, 15-minute brake system inspection.

Brake Safety Week is an annual event that began in 2006 and focuses on enhancing knowledge, regulatory compliance and performance of commercial vehicle braking systems. It is co-ordinated throughout North America by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), a non-profit organization consisting of U.S., Canadian and Mexican officials established to promote commercial vehicle safety.
