The Government of Saskatchewan announced today it will invest $500,000 this fiscal year in shortline rail infrastructure to help sustain the province's thriving economy and ensuring its transportation system meets current and future needs.
Through a new and first-of-its-kind provincial program, the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure will fund half the cost of approved projects, while eligible shortline rail companies will fund the other half. The investment goals are to improve shortline rail safety, capacity and efficiency.
"Our export-based and growing economy relies on a responsive transportation network that can move goods quickly and as cost-effectively as possible," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Wayne Elhard said. Shortline rail is an increasingly important part of that network - it contributes to economic growth in rural and smaller communities, while linking them to provincial, national and worldwide markets."
A shortline railway is eligible to apply for funding if it meets criteria, such as supporting economic development in its region and demonstrating its ability to contribute to its share of a project. Priority will be given to projects improving safety and efficiency of service.
"I'm happy to hear this announced today," Saskatchewan Shortline Railroad Association chairman Roger Gadd said. "Shortline railways have been requesting an infrastructure program and have worked with the province to see it developed. It is great to see this much needed program become a reality."
Saskatchewan currently has eight shortline railways covering 1,411 kilometres, which are regulated by the province. These provincial shortlines connect to the rail lines of national railways, which are regulated by the federal government.
