INQUIRY LINE UPGRADED TO TOLL FREE TO HELP COMMERCIAL CARRIERS AND TRUCK DRIVERS

Released on February 8, 2008

A new Saskatchewan toll-free telephone number was officially launched today to make it easier for truckers and commercial carriers to get regulation information and technical advice.

"I'm pleased to see the Ministry taking into account industry feedback by upgrading this existing service," Highways and Infrastructure Minister Wayne Elhard said. "Getting rid of the long-distance costs will make it easier for commercial carriers across Saskatchewan to get the information they need before going on the road so they have an even safer and more efficient operation."

A Saskatoon-based transport investigator for the new, 1-866-933-5290 Transport Compliance Branch Inquiry Line began receiving calls in early December.

The existing 306-933-5290 inquiry line started in 2000 and can still be used by Saskatoon callers or commercial carriers from outside Saskatchewan. The existing 306 number was already receiving about 4,000 inquiries annually.

The line operates weekdays, except statuary holidays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Ministry's Transport Compliance Branch (TCB) helps ensure the physical integrity and safety of Saskatchewan's highways, by monitoring the fitness of commercial vehicles driving on them. This is done through enforcement, inspection and education activities focusing on the trucking industry, bus companies, professional drivers and related commercial carriers.
