On February 22nd and 23rd, the Saskatchewan Association of Chemical Dependency Workers hosted a methamphetamine addiction and treatment workshop in Saskatoon. This workshop is a first step in the province's crystal meth strategy addressing treatment and pharmacological concerns for Saskatchewan service providers."The information shared in the workshop will form the foundation of crystal meth specific treatment protocols as outlined in the province's crystal meth strategy," Health Minister John Nilson said. "Our strategy takes a co-ordinated and integrated approach to crystal meth and other substance abuse. This workshop is a step in the right direction, providing much needed information and skill development for service providers in Saskatchewan."
The province's plan for crystal meth identifies four key areas of strategic focus: prevention; treatment; education and reducing drug supply (supply interdiction). It outlines 25 key actions for each of these four areas and provides examples of the many initiatives currently underway throughout the province. It also identifies many new initiatives including implementation of the treatment protocols discussed at this week's workshop.
Graham Addley, Legislative Secretary to the Premier on Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment was present to participate in the first part of the workshop.
"My first priority is to research current practices and to consult with service providers and other parties interested in substance abuse," Addley said. "The information provided in this workshop illustrates the good work currently being done in Saskatchewan and provides direction for future initiatives."
