Beneficial Management Practices Guidelines

A BMP is defined as any agricultural management practices which:

  • Ensures the long-term health and sustainability of land-related resources used for agricultural production;
  • Positively impacts the long-term economic and environmental viability of agricultural production; and
  • Minimizes negative impacts and risk to the environment.

Livestock Site Management BMPs

Reduce the risk of ground and surface water contamination, and damage to riparian areas and waterways.

Relocation of Livestock Confinement Facilities – 60 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $50,000

Fencing to Protect Surface Water – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $10,000 

Farmyard Runoff Control – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $30,000 

Riparian Area Grazing Management and Fencing – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $10,000 

Native Rangeland Grazing Management – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $10,000 

Carcass Disposal Planning – 75 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $30,000    

Manure Management BMPs

Reduce environmental risks (e.g. ground/surface water contamination, nutrient loss and odour) associated with manure storage and application.

Manure Storage Enhancements – 30 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $50,000 

Manure Application Equipment and Technologies – 30 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $30,000 

Land Management BMPs

Protect natural waterways, riparian ecosystems, and high risk erodible and saline soils.

Natural Waterway Erosion Control – 75 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $30,000 

Creek and Stream Crossings – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $20,000 

Protecting High Risk Erodible and Saline Soils – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $10,000

Native Plant Establishment – 75 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $10,000 

Shelterbelt Establishment – Flat rate of $1200 per mile to a maximum of $5,000 

Weather Data Collection and Monitoring – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $1,000 

Water Flow and Erosion Control – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $20,000

Irrigation Management BMPs

Improve water use efficiency, protect water quality, and improve energy efficiency.

Irrigation Management Planning – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $2,000 

Irrigation Equipment Modification – 30 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $50,000 

Variable Rate Irrigation Technology – 30 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $15,000  

Irrigation Efficiency - 40 per cent of eligible costs, to a maximum of $25,000

Precision Farming BMPs

Reduce nutrient loss and potential risks to ground and surface water quality, and to improve energy efficiency.

Variable Fertilizer Equipment – 30 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $5,000 

Variable Rate Mapping – 30 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $2,000  

Agricultural Waste Management BMPs

Manage agricultural waste through storage improvements and recycling.

Plastic Grain Bag Roller – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $5,000 

Used Oil Storage – 50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $2,000 

Environmental Solutions BMPs

Identify and implement projects with environmental and public benefit that do not fit into a current BMP.

Environmental Solutions – 20-50 per cent of eligible costs to a maximum of $50,000
